Czech Republic participated in the EU inspection plan for honey and fish

01/11/2016

The European Union co-financed sampling and laboratory analyses of 90 samples of honey and 163 samples of fish taken in the Czech Republic. The inspection was carried out within the co-ordinated control plan of the EU focused on the commodities concerned. During the inspection activity that was carried out during the whole year 2015 in the EU Member States, the supervisory authorities took a total of 2.237 samples of honey and 3.906 samples of fish. The EU reimbursed to the Czech Republic the costs for sampling and analyses amounting to 17.100 EUR.

The aim of this inspection activity was to enhance understanding increasing malpractices and fraudulent conduct in relation these commodities. The sampling procedures and analytical methods which the participating countries applied were unified for certain period and the results could be thus fully compared and evaluated.

According to the preliminary results, the most frequent deficiency as regards honey sampled in the EU Member States was incorrect labelling of botanical origin (7% of samples assessed) – i.e. incorrect labelling of the plant or plants from which the pollen originated - and also adulteration of honey by sugar solutions 6%). As regards processed and unprocessed fish, the analyses confirmed that trade labelling fails to correspond to the biological sorts of the fish (6%). Substantial part of incorrectly labelled fish is consisted of Atlantic cod and various sorts of hakes.

As regards the Czech Republic, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) and the State Veterinary Administration (SVA) were the participating authorities with CAFIA as the guarantor and administrator.
