“Czech Quality” from Poland again in Penny Market

12/01/2014

Misleading information on alleged Czech origin of foodstuffs was detected by the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) in the premises of company Penny Market s.r.o. on Palackého náměstí in Třešť on 28th November. The seller offered two sorts of foodstuffs Chips Smažené bramborové lupínky (Fried potato chips) under shelf tag “Česká kvalita” (Czech Quality) with picture of the flag of the CR, however, the information on the labelling of the product indicated “Vyrobeno v Polsku pro PENNY Market s.r.o….” (“Manufactured in Poland for PENNY Market s.r.o….”). Such information may mislead consumers, because they legitimately expect that the foodstuff originates in the Czech Republic. CAFIA ordered the seller to immediately remove the misleading labelling of the country of origin from the shelf tag in all branches of Penny Market in the Czech Republic. Repeated inspection carried out on 29th November 2014 in Penny Market on Nádražní street in Vimperk found out that the seller failed to meet the imposed measure. The inspection confirmed that the foodstuff was still sold with the accompanying shelf tag “Česká kvalita” and Czech flag. CAFIA further revealed that spirit drink Arktická jemná 0.5 l with obvious indication of origin in Slovakia was also sold under “Česká kvalita”. Due to the misleading of consumers and failure to meet the imposed measures, CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with Penny Market.
As CAFIA informed in its press releases  of 13. 2. 2012, 15. 2. 2012 and 21. 2. 2012, Penny Market already had problems in the past.
