Czech National Contact Point for RASFF demands explanation from the European Commission in the case of dioxins

01/19/2011

Director General of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority Jakub Šebesta has sent today a protest letter to José Luis de Felipe, Director of the RASFF (Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed) which belongs to DG SANCO (Directorate General for Health and Consumer Protection) of the European Commission. He asks for an explanation of the unprecedented process concerning dioxin case, when the centre of this all-European system failed to sent in time information to the Czech National Contact Point which is managed by the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority.
Czech media released on Thursday 13th January extremely important information concerning pork meat potentially contaminated with dioxin which originated from a German farm and which was imported to the Czech Republic. This underlying information was, however, sent to the National Contact Point from DG SANCO only the following morning. Without relevant information, Czech supervisory authorities could not take any effective actions and in addition to that, they were not able to provide public with any relevant information.
CAFIA Director General warns Mr. José Luis de Felipe that despite the best effort and responsibility of the Czech National Contact Point staff, RASSF´s reputation is threatened and its foundation may disappear. Their non-stop work makes no sense in such situation and credibility of the system can be legitimately questioned.

At the end of his letter, Jakub Šebesta asks for explanation and vigorous remedies on behalf of health protection not only of Czech consumers.
