Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority warns against fake inspectors

01/17/2006

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) warns mainly Prague grocery operators, but also other food business operators against people who pose themselves as food inspectors.

According to the Food Inspection Authority’s existing information, a thirty-year old man of respectable appearance who visited a larger delicatessen in the area of Prague 6 posed himself as a CAFIA inspector on Monday, 16 January. He proved his identity to the staff with alleged inspector’s identity card and allowed himself to be shown around the whole establishment. He made a brief record in the inspection book and without requiring anything he left.

On the same day, again in Prague 6, another man, about fifty years of age, who “checked” smaller grocery on one of the side streets posed himself as a CAFIA inspector. After his visit, the staff found out that a larger amount of money disappeared from their till. This case is now being investigated by the Police of the Czech Republic.

Since these cases do not have to be isolated, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority advises all shopkeepers or food business operators to require during inspectors’ visits not only CAFIA card but also so called Authorization for Inspection that every inspector must carry. In case of any suspicion, it is possible to contact the CAFIA Inspectorate in Prague at 257 199 511, or to refer to any CAFIA Inspectorate. Contact telephone numbers can be found on the CAFIA website at www.szpi.gov.cz.
