Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority detained 540 kilograms of durian containing a cocktail of nine pesticides at the Czech border

Inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA), in cooperation with the Prague – Ruzyně Customs Office, blocked a shipment of durian from entering the market after laboratory analysis confirmed the presence of residues of nine different pesticides in quantities exceeding the legal limits. The non-compliant batch weighed 540 kg. Durian is a tropical fruit originating from Southeast Asia, known for its strong-smelling pulp.

The following food product was concerned:

Durian, batch identification: Lot no: 080325, importer: Julia Alex asianfood s.r.o., Jalodvorská 845/8, Prague 142 00, supplier: HIGHLAND FRUIT COMPANY LIMITED, address: 5/19 Street 210, W. Tang Nhon Phu A, Thu Duc City, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, country of origin: Vietnam, shipment weight: 540 kg.

Accredited laboratory analysis of the product confirmed the presence of the following pesticide residues:

  • Dimethomorph: 0.36 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Flubendiamide: 0.20 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Hexaconazole: 0.23 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Lufenuron: 0.022 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Metalaxyl and Metalaxyl-M: 0.11 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Profenofos: 0.096 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Propamocarb: 2.9 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Propiconazole: 0.11 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)
  • Thiamethoxam: 0.15 mg/kg (limit: 0.01 mg/kg)

Based on the laboratory results, CAFIA inspectors decided not to allow the food product onto the internal market. The importer was subsequently ordered to either destroy the affected batch, send it outside the EU, or use it for non-food purposes. The non-compliant shipment was returned to its country of origin.

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority has initiated administrative proceedings with the inspected entity to impose a fine.
