CAFIA warns of cases of misleading about the meat content in canned goulash

08/18/2023

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) banned four lots of Hungarian goulash contained less meat compared to the information on the labelling. CAFIA made this detection within a part of an inspection carried out in the market network and focused on food parameters.

CAFIA ordered company Lidl Česká republika v.o.s. to withdraw the non-compliant lots of the foodstuff Hungarian Goulash Pikok, the manufacturer of which is indicated on the packaging as Whalley s.r.o., Mikulášovická 552, 407 78 Velký Šenov. The products have to be withdrawn from the market network without any delay.

The manufacturer stated on the labelling of the foodstuff, inter alia, that the product contained 31.25 % of beef and 31.25 % of pork, i.e. 62,5 % of meat in total. However, laboratory analysis confirmed that the total meat content in these four lots was lower, in one case by more than 20 percentage points. Consumers were thus given misleading information regarding the composition of the food.

The products had following best before dates: BBD: 30.03.2026 (meat content: 41.6 %); BBD: 14.12.2025 (meat content: 45.6 %); BBD: 24.03.2025 (meat content: 54.5 %); BBD: 16.03.2026 (meat content: 47.2 %).

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure with the inspected person to impose a fine.
