CAFIA warns against usage of preparation BSN Thermonex foundation
04/06/2011The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) warns consumers against usage of food for particular nutritional uses intended for sportsmen named as BSN Thermonex foundation 120 cps originating from the USA (producer: Bio-Engineered Supplements & Nutrition).
This food contains octopamine hydrochloride. CAFIA inspectors found out that this food contains in some cases octopamine in the amount which atthe recommended dosage indicated on the product packaging (3 capsules 2 - 3 times a day) and declared content of octopamine hydrochloride (octopamine hydrochloride content per dose is 200 mg which corresponds to 182 mg of octopamine, 1 dose = 3 tablets) exceeds therapeutic doses of substance called octopamine.
The risk assessment of the Ministry of Health indicates that food BSN Thermonex 120 cps foundation, which declares the content of 200 mg octopamine hydrochloride per dose and provides dosage 3 capsules 2 - 3 times a day, cannot be regarded as safe.
Octopamineis used as ingredient of food supplements and food for particular nutritional uses intended for sportsmen to reduce weight and body fat (known as "fat burners"). This substance, however, also increases blood pressure and there is higher risk particularly when taken together with other means of weight loss or stimulants. Caution is appropriate especially in case of patients with cardiac arrhythmias and severe heart and vascular diseases.
BSN Thermonex foundation 120 cps is offered mainly through internet shops, but it is possible that it could be sold in regular shops as well. The Inspection Authority does not recommend consumption of preparation BSN Thermonex foundation containing 200 mg of octopamine hydrochloride per dose and with declared dosage 3 capsules 2 – 3 times a day.
CAFIA is currently initiating withdrawal of this food from circulation. Inspection results related to this product were sent to the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
In the long runCAFIA intensively focuses its attention on checks of food supplements and food for particular nutritional uses intended for sportsmen, especially in terms of safety.
