The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) does not recommend that consumers use foodstuff with trade name “BSN Thermonex foundation 120 cps” produced by companyBio-Engineered Supplements & Nutrition. The preparation originating from the USA is intended for specific nutrition for sportspeople. The risk consists in excessive amount of octopamine in the recommended daily dosage.
CAFIA inspectors found out that in certain cases, this foodstuff contains octopamine in amount presenting approximately 54mg when kept the recommended daily dosage given on the product packaging (1 capsule every day). According to the opinion of the Ministry of Health, it is not possible to exclude occurrence of serious negative side effects related to the use of octopamine at this amount, which is close to the therapeutic dosage.
Octopamine is used as a component of food supplements and foodstuffs for specific nutrition intended for reduction of body weight and fat (known as “fat burners”). However, this substance also increases body pressure and poses higher risk in particular when used in combination with other substances for slimming or stimulants. According to the Ministry of Health, its use is partly or completely excluded at patients with glaucoma and malfunction of urinary bladder. High attention should be paid by persons with heart arrhythmia and serious hearth and vessels diseases. However, it can pose a threat to completely health consumers as well.
Preparation BSN Thermonex foundation 120 cps is offered in particular through internet shops, however, it is possible that it can be offered also in common retails.
CAFIA already took measure ordering to withdraw this foodstuff from the market. Results of the investigation were sent to the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
CAFIA inspectors dealt with the same product already at the beginning of this year. The recommended daily dosage given on the packaging at that time (3 capsules 2-3 times a day) exceeded the therapeutic dosages. CAFIA thus already at that time ordered to withdraw this foodstuff from the circulation. However, this preparation cannot be regarded as safe even after reduction of the recommended dosage.
CAFIA pays long-term and intensive attention to inspection of food supplements and foodstuffs for specific nutrition intended for sports people, namely as regards their safety for consumers.
