CAFIA today immediately prohibited the sale of foodstuffs in Hypernova, Jindřichův Hradec

09/21/2005

The Tábor Inspectorate of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) today prohibited the sale of all foodstuffs in Hypernova store operated by Ahold Czech Republic, a.s., company, Jindřichův Hradec. CAFIA prohibited the company from using premises intended for sale of foodstuffs because there was a risk of threatening consumer health.

During several repeated controls, the CAFIA inspectors found in the selling area, in storerooms and directly on shelves with food a large amount of mouse droppings, gnawed food packaging and food itself, and even live or dead mice. Traces of mice romping could be seen practically all over the store: on shelves there were gnawed bags with flour, sugar, pasta, spices, instant soups, oats, rice, flakes and popcorn, hillocks of mouse droppings were even in shelves with mayonnaise, ketchups and soy sauces.

A large amount of mouse droppings were also on the floor in the room where bakery products and cakes are prepared, and where the inspectors found gnawed plastic bags contaminated with mouse droppings. The staff packaged bakery products for consumers into these bags. Under pallets on which waffles and other confectionery products were stored in the storeroom there was a dead mouse. The inspectors identified a number of other deficiencies in the shop.

Although the CAFIA had imposed on the Ahold company several measures to remedy deficiencies, they have not been implemented. For this reason, the CAFIA today prohibited the sale of all foodstuffs in this shop.

An administrative proceeding will be initiated with the Ahold company and CAFIA will impose a fine on it, amounting up to several hundred Czech crowns.
