CAFIA suspended 18 tons of mouldy peanuts from China containing aflatoxins

02/11/2016

Presence of unsafe aflatoxins was confirmed by the laboratory analysis of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) in a consignment containing 18 tons of peanuts. The consignment in question was detained in co-operation with the Customs authorities in the customs area in Rudná near Prague. With regard to the fact that the commodity concerned originated from a country with the so-called strengthened official control, the inspectors took samples. Subsequent laboratory analysis of the samples confirmed presence of substances from the group of aflatoxins amounting up to 17.88 micrograms while the maximum limit for aflatoxins in peanuts is 4 micrograms per kilogram. Moreover, a part of the consignment was affected by mould which was visible to the naked eye.

With regard to the detected facts, CAFIA decided that the consignment will not be released from the customs area onto the internal market and consumers were thus not threatened. Importer Ing. Bohumil Kratochvíl IBK TRADE is thus not allowed to place the consignment on the whole market within the EU countries.

Aflatoxins are substances originating as products of metabolism of moulds. They are carcinogens which are cumulated in human body and they are not degradable by common means.
