CAFIA statement: radioactive contamination in Japan

03/16/2011

Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA), as one of the members of the Radiation Monitoring Network in the country, observes very closely situation in the food market due to the recent release of radiation in Japan

In the near future, inspectors - in cooperation with the General Directorate of Customs - will take samples of food consignments coming  from Japan, whose importers ask for their release into free circulation in the Czech Republic. Foodstuffs produced in Japan, which are now available in the retail network, are to be very unlikely contaminated due to the time of their production, transport and storage. However, CAFIA in the coming days will focus on controls of retail to check foods that might reached CZ through other EU member countries.

A situation, which has the utmost attention of the General Directorate for Health and Consumer Protection (DG SANCO), is now carefully and continuously monitored. Any important information regarding the situation in Japan is transmitted through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF). CAFIA is ready to react swiftly and inform the public in case of any threat to consumers.
