CAFIA revealed worms in chocolate

09/27/2007

Jednota, commercial cooperative in Tábor, had to withdraw from sale Forte milk chocolate with peanuts, raisins and jelly in a packaging of 150g, best before: 19/10/ 2007, lot T 0270771.

This withdrawal was based on the decision of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CFAIA) which revealed live worms in the chocolate during one of the inspections at Jednota establishments.

Chocolate of the above lot was delivered to Jednota by Kraft Foods CR which imported it from Slovakia. The producer is Kraft Food Slovakia.

The CAFIA notified the presence of worms in this milk chocolate with peanuts, raisins and jelly to the European Commission through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed.

Live or dead bodies of pests in any stage of evolution must not be present in food, thus not even eggs, larvae, cocoons or adult insects. Inspectors find pests very rarely. They are particularly various types of pyralid moths, beetles, moths, mites and other types of insects. Pests may occur in chocolate, dried fruit, different kinds of nuts, in spice, bakery products, flour, mill products, meat, eggs and elsewhere. Insects can get in the final foodstuff together with raw materials or during production or storage if a food business operator does not meet hygiene requirements for the production and placing on the market of foodstuffs.

Food can also be infested with store pests (moths) when stored at home.
