CAFIA revealed barrel wine adulterated with unauthorised synthetic aromatic substances

12/13/2017

During recent months, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carried out a random inspection of barrel wines sold mostly in wine shops. The inspection was focused on the content of unauthorised synthetic substances in wine.

Inspectors preferred aromatic varieties, such as Tramín, Pálava, Pinot Gris, Moravian Muscat or Muscat Ottonel or Sauvignon.

Out of the 20 samples of barrel wine taken, presence of unauthorised synthetic aromatic substances was detected in 4 cases.

Laboratory analyses were carried out by a new accredited method for determination of so-called gama-lactones. This method is used to reveal this kind of adulteration, thus addition of artificial synthetic aromas into wines of which presence is not allowed in this kind of foodstuff.

Unfortunately, the inspection confirmed the suspicion of the use of this unauthorised oenological practice.

CAFIA informed of introduction of this new laboratory method in its press release of 14th July 2017.

CAFIA will continue to perform this targeted type of inspection in the future as well and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected persons.
