In 2014, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carried out a total of 35,361 inspections. Out of this number, 25.394 inspections were carried out at retails, 9,011 at production and 4.935 at warehouses, customs warehouses, primary production, and other premises.
In the previous year, CAFIA also found a total of 4,276 unsatisfactory lots of foodstuffs and further products. Out of this number, 3,974 unsatisfactory lots were found at retails, 183 lots at production, 89 lots at warehouses, and 30 lots at other premises.
On average, 1 in 6 inspections at retails detected an unsatisfactory lot compared to 1 in 50 inspections in warehouses. Non-compliant foodstuffs at retails appear 8 times more often than at producers.
As regards food commodities, CAFIA found the highest proportion of non-compliant lots at chocolates and confectionary products, where 68% of sampled products failed to comply with requirements of legislation, followed by honey (67%), additives and aromatic substances (62%) and dehydrated products (54%). To the contrary, cereals and potatoes were on the other side of the scale, where only 2% and 7% failed to comply with regulations.
As regards the country of origin, non-compliant lots form the CR (19.4%) and EU Member Countries (19.1%) are comparable. The highest proportion of non-compliant foodstuffs was production imported from third countries (39.9%).
At the same time CAFIA imposed 13,895 measures, such as ban amounting to 16,914,975.‑ CZK. Out of this number 13,768 bans were imposed in retails in the total amount of 16,515,676.- CZK and 27 bans at producers in the total amount of 399,299 CZK.
The amount of fines lawfully imposed within administrative procedures in 2014 reached the total of 99,429,300.- CZK.
