In 2013 the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carried out 35.686 inspections which, is by 550 inspections more than in the previous year. Out of this number, 25.961 inspections were carried out in retail network, 8.967 in production and 4.196 in wholesales, customs warehouses, primary production and other premises.
In the previous year CAFIA detected total of 4.086 non-complying lots of foodstuffs which represents 23% of all lots that were checked. Out of this number, CAFIA found 3.745 non-complying lots in retails, 242 lots in production and 99 in other premises. A non-complying lot was found in one case out of 7 inspections in retail, in one case out of 37 in production in average. Non-complying foodstuffs were thus found c. five times more frequently in retails compared to producers.
The highest proportion of non-complying lots was found at chocolates and confectionary products, where 75% of samples failed to comply with requirements of legislation. They are followed by honey and dehydrated products with 53% of non-complying lots and fresh fruit where non-complying features were found at 44% of the assessed lots. On the contrary, the lowest number of non-complying lots was found at cereals and tobacco products: 1% and 5% were non-complying.
As regards the origin of foodstuffs, the least problematic were domestic products, where CAFIA found deficiencies at 17% of the checked lots, similarly as in the previous year. As regards foodstuffs originating in EU countries, CAFIA assessed 28% of lots as non-complying, and as regards foodstuffs originating in third countries, 38% were assessed as failing to comply with legislation.
The total amount of lawfully imposed fines in administrative proceeding increased by 29 million CZK compared to the previous year, and in 2013 thus amounted to 64.121.500 CZK. At the same time CAFIA imposed 15.513 measures such as ban.

Food Pillory and its applications for mobile phones. CAFIA is currently launching its official
Facebook profile of the Food Pillory with the aim to make information on non-complying foodstuffs public as well as recommendations and advices concerning foodstuffs. This information should be made available to as widest scope of consumers as possible including the least informed group in the age between 18 and 24 years.
