CAFIA publishes complete results of half-fermented wine carried out in 2010

01/07/2011

In November 2010, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority concluded inspections focused on the sale of half-fermented wine (burčák) and partly-fermented grape must that can be sold only from the beginning of August until the end of November. Now the second round of results and the final results of laboratory analyses are available. Directly on the spot, inspectors checked hygiene of sale, documents related to the origin of half-fermented wine and also correct labelling of the drink in question. The aim of these analyses was to reveal possible adulteration of this drink.
In the second round, 19 samples labelled as half-fermented wine (burčák) were analysed, out of which 10 samples failed to comply with requirements of applicable legislation. The reasons were as follows: adulterating half-fermented wine with water (5 cases); content of ethanol originating from the added sugar higher than admissible limit (3 cases); labelling partly fermented grape must as half-fermented wine (partly fermented grape must may be labelled as burčák only on condition that it was produced in the Czech Republic from Czech or Moravian grapes – 5 cases), and using synthetic colours (by adding colourings, red burčák can be made from white one or adulteration with water can be camouflaged – 1 case). 2 samples of partly fermented grape must were further analysed. These were produced of grapes originating in Slovakia and Italy and they both complied.
The total results of analyses are then nowise optimistic: Out of 47 samples of burčák or partly fermented grape must, 20 samples were non-complying.
In 2010 in total 15 samples of partly fermented grape must were taken (out of which 4 samples were non-complying) and in total 32 samples labelled as burčák (out of 16 samples were non-complying).
Administrative proceedings will be initiated with the sellers of non-complying half-fermented wines from the reason of misleading consumers; namely fines will be imposed within such administrative proceedings.

See below the tables with results of second and final analyses of half-fermented wines and partly fermented grape musts carried out in 2010.

Notes related to Table No. 1 and No. 2:
* Pursuant to Commission Regulation (EU) No.1022/2010 of 12. 11. 2010 authorising an increase of the limits for the enrichment of wine produced using the grapes harvested in 2010 in certain wine-growing zones, the increase of natural alcohol volume must not exceed 2,5% vol. in wine-growing area B, where ČR – Moravia falls under. The new limit is therefore taken into account in case of samples taken after that date.
