Foodstuff labelling is an extensive field of control, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority aims at. Legislation determines a whole range of data that have to be marked on the foodstuff, so that the consumer is as well informed as possible and is able to decide adequately according to his preferences when shopping. On the grounds of information on the package, especially as regards food ingredients, one can estimate its quality. However, for people with digestive disorders this information is also important for protection of their health. For example people suffering from the so-called celiac disease have to follow the gluten-free diet the whole their life, e. g. they must not eat foodstuffs containing gluten. These foodstuffs include all what was made of cereals (barley, wheat, rye, oat), i. e. among others also common bakery products.
Exactly with regard to people suffering from celiac disease CAFIA checks correct labelling of ingredients, in this case the cereals, on food packaging. Inspectors also take into laboratories the food samples which are not made of cereals in order to verify if they were not accidentally contaminated by cereals during production. In this way one succeded in revealing gluten content in Coarse Rice Flour (500 gram package, best before date 12.2010) which was packed by company Natural Jihlava JK s. r. o. As on the package of this product neither cereal nor gluten content itself was declared, CAFIA ordered to withdraw this flour batch from retail chain. According to legislation this foodstuff was qualified as dangerous.
Company Natural Jihlava distributed 702 pieces of these flour packages. However, it also packed other sorts and batches of flour made of raw material from the same Slovakian supplier, therefore the company decided to withdraw voluntarily all batches of coarse, medium-ground and fine rice flour from retail chain.
