In recent days Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority solved suggestion from a consumer who found small foreign particles in a sliced cheese packaging. The suggestion concerned Processed Sliced Cheese Amore Toast, processed product of Gouda cheese (packaging 85 g, best before date: 22 September 2010) which was produced in Italy. Inspectors immediately carried out an inspection of this cheese in the retail chain and they really found out that there were several millimeters big and sharp particles of unknown origin in other packagings of the same cheese lot.
Further survey proved that these particles were neither of plastic nor of glass. It was revealed by means of laboratory analyses that crystallized lactose, the so-called milk sugar, was concerned. Although it is not a foreign substance, lactose should not occur in a product in the form of small crystals. From this reason the Inspection issued an order to the seller to withdraw the lot of cheese concerned from the retail network. Crystallizing of lactose could have been caused by a defect in production technology.
Considering long durability, consumers can still store the cheese at home. However, they do not need to worry about their health, lactose occurs naturally in milk, thus also milk products contain it in certain amount. On the other hand consumption of cheese with crystals which cause teeth screeching is not pleasant at all.
State Veterinary Administration of the Czech Republic, which is competent to control the importer of the cheese concerned, was notified of the case.
