CAFIA ordered to withdraw misleadingly labelled cod

05/05/2016

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered company Tesco Stores ČR a.s. to immediately withdraw food Treska aljašská (Theragra chalcogramma – cod, skinned filets – glazed deeply frozen) with best before date by 20th February 2017, lot No. LGT0585/16/68RN3, weight à 765 g, country of origin China, country of production: Poland, produced by: Abramczyk Sp. z o.o., street Witebska 63, 85-778 Bydgoszcz, Poland.

The producer stated on the labelling: Alaskan cod filets 100%, however, CAFIA laboratory analysis confirmed presence of meat amounting to 73.7% only. Labelling of the foodstuff was thus untrue as regards the composition and violated European food legislation. Based on that fact, CAFIA ordered the seller to immediately withdraw the lot in question from the retail network and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with him.

With regard to the fact that in last 6 months CAFIA has banned already 6 lots of frozen fish with lower content of meat than declared, out of which 5 originated in China and 1 in Vietnam, CAFIA will continue with these inspections. For details, go to the Food Pillory website.
