The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) dealt with inappropriate and insufficient information provided on the labelling of certain products made by company Opavia, and ordered company Mondelez Czech Republic s.r.o. to re-label such products.
CAFIA ordered company Mondelez Czech Republic s.r.o. to ensure that the products of brand Opavia not produced in the Czech Republic contain information on the country of origin on the labelling. Namely, following products are concerned: Piškoty, BeBe Rodinné, Brumík, Disko, Zlaté Mini Polomáčené, Zlaté kolečka and Zlaté sušenky. At the present time, the labelling provides following information: “Seller: Mondelez Czech Republic, s.r.o., Karolínská 661/4, 18600 Prague, Czech Republic”.
Indicating the seller is not information on the country of origin and in connection with brand Opavia, which is traditionally associated with the premises in Opava, may be misleading consumers who may thus regard the product as originating in the CR.
The country of origin is not mandatory information that would have to be indicated on the labelling of confectionary products. Cases when further information on the food labelling may mislead consumers just as regards the country of origin are the only exceptions. The production of sponge biscuits was moved abroad in the course of 2015.
The measure concerns products made after 31st March 2016. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
