CAFIA notifies of frozen maize on Czech market contaminated by Listeria monocytogenes

07/10/2018

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) received a notification from the supervisory authority in Belgium informing of distribution of various frozen vegetable mixtures produced in Belgium from a deficient raw material – maize from Hungarian producer Greenyard Rozen. The notification was received via the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) and provides information on possible contamination by bacteria Listeria monocytogenes present in lots of the raw material produced between 13th August 2016 and 20th June 2018. The food products – mainly frozen vegetable mixtures containing deficient raw material are currently being withdrawn from the market of several European countries.

At the present time these unsafe foodstuffs are being withdrawn from the Czech market, of which, in compliance with the requirement of legislation, inform following sellers on their websites: Tesco Stores ČR a.s., Lidl Česká republika v.o.s., Penny Market s.r.o. and MAKRO Cash & Carry ČR s.r.o.

CAFIA strongly recommends all consumers they do not eat the lots of the foodstuffs currently being withdrawn.

Bacteria Listeria monocytogenes causes listeriosis. The disease affects in particular persons with reduced immunity, older persons, pregnant women and the newborns. As regards healthy persons, the disease may have symptoms similar to less serious flu. The bacteria can survive temperatures even under 0°C and consumers should therefore carefully treat frozen vegetables to reduce the risk of infection and they should not consume this vegetable without heat treatment (e.g. in salads and smoothies).
