The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered company Tesco Stores ČR, a.s. to withdraw foodstuff Meruňky sušené, vypeckované (dried stoned apricots) à 200 g, lot number L21400076D, and use by date by 14th January 2015 produced by ENCINGER spol. s.r.o., Jadranská 13, 841 01, Bratislava. CAFIA found out unnatural odour after fermentation and 30% of fruit of all assessed lots were affected by a rodent - Carpoglyphus lactis. The sale of foodstuffs affected by rodents and smell after fermentation means risk to consumers and it is significant violation of food law. CAFIA therefore banned putting the whole lot into circulation and will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
The laboratory analysis of CAFIA detected toxic substance aflatoxin in 450 kg of hazelnuts stored at the premises of company TRIAS ČR s.r.o. in Chrudim. The sample taken at this wholesale contained aflatoxins of group B1 amounting to 10.49 µg/kg , however, the limit is 5 µg/kg. The analysis further detected the total level of aflatoxins B1, B2, G1 a G2 as 48.75 µg/kg, however, the maximum admissible limit is 10 µg/kg. Aflatoxins are results of mould metabolism, which are capable to damage human health provided they are present in amount exceeding the limit. CAFIA therefore ordered to withdraw the unwholesome lots. Due to the traceability system, the unwholesome nuts were withdrawn before they got to consumers.
Based on the risk assessment, CAFIA intensifies its pre-Christmas inspections of that assortment which is sought by consumers in higher amount in relation just with Christmas. Among others, dried fruit, nuts, selected sorts of spices, confectionary products and further foodstuffs and raw materials are concerned.
