CAFIA inspectors found insects in dried apricots from Turkey

08/27/2007

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) banned the placing on the market of dried pitted apricots in a package of 200 g, best before date: 15 June 2008. The dried apricots were found to contain tiny white insects.

The apricots were imported to the Czech Republic from Obio Organik Tarim Urunleri San. Tic. Ltd. Sti. by K-Servis, Praha, and supplied to the distribution chain of the company Penny Market after being repacked by LTC, Vysoké Mýto.

Since it is assumed that insect embryos were present in the dried fruits already in Turkey, the CAFIA today informed the European Commission of this case through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
