CAFIA inspectors banned unsafe foodstuffs during inspection in SAPA

05/18/2018

On 17th May 2018 the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) performed an inspection activity in the Prague SAPA market hall. The inspection was carried out in co-operation with the Police of the CR, the Customs Authorities and the State Veterinary Administration (SVS). CAFIA inspectors checked premises and transport vehicles.

During the inspection, the inspectors imposed a ban on the use of the premises of one operator from the reason of unacceptable hygiene conditions – occurrence of pests, moulds and neglected cleaning in a long-term view. The inspectors further banned using of one of the vehicles for transport of foodstuffs due to unsuitable technical conditions, extraordinary unsatisfactory hygiene situation in the transportation part of the car and mouldy incorporated refrigerating equipment. Both situations posed risk to consumers’ health and the inspectors also put a ban on the placing of all foodstuffs present at these premises.

In the course of the inspections, the CAFIA inspectors imposed a ban on placing of 34 bags of mung sprouts (c. 170 kg) on the market, which were stored under unsuitable temperatures between 16 – 22.3°C. However, legislation lays down that the maximum temperature is + 4°C as a foodstuff with a high risk of salmonella was concerned. The inspectors also had to impose a ban on c. 20 kg of lemon grass due to presence of mould, deficiencies in labelling and failure to submit relevant documentation.

Within the inspection of public catering facilities, the inspectors banned c. 295 kg of frozen meat, inter alia, also shrimps including unfinished meals. Foodstuffs were not provided with labelling and the operator failed to introduce a traceability system.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
