CAFIA identified serious deficiencies in Delvita Labe supermarket. It will closely examine the whole Delvita chain

07/11/2007

On Wednesday 11 July, early in the morning, yet before opening hours, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) checked a Delvita store on Mazancova Street in Prague.

Inspectors identified deficiencies directly in the store as well as in the meat preparation room and therefore ordered to destroy 44.6 kg of meat which was not suitable for human consumption. The meat had either expired use by date or changed colour and was slimy.

The specific deficiencies were as follows: 9 packs of beef meat and 4 packs of pork meat which the employees withdrew on 10 July for change of colour were placed on the work table in meat preparation room. These foodstuffs were not labelled as foodstuffs for disposal.

Although a company employee sorted out meat on shelves in the morning, two packs of boneless pork loin which was at the stage of beginning rotting stayed there.

8.6 kg of beef and pork cutout prepared for mincing was stored in a cooling box next to the preparation room. Among fresh cutout, inspectors revealed pieces of meat unsuitable for human consumption, i.e. pieces of rotting meat (having changed colour and slimy) and pieces of meat with blood. Since the fresh meat was mixed with meat unsuitable for human consumption, the inspectors banned the whole batch from processing and ordered its transportation to the rendering plant.

The cooling box next to the preparation room also contained packed meat which was not labelled. The meat was packed on 10 July 2007. However, if labels had been printed, they would have born the date of 11 July 2007. This would have shifted the use by date by one day. The supermarket employees were ordered to ensure correct labelling of meat.

Based on the results of this inspection, the CAFIA decided to focus closely on other stores of this commercial chain too, to find out whether it was a failure of duties only in this store, or whether this procedure is applied throughout the whole commercial chain. Findings from today’s inspection at Delvita Budějovická, Prague, have already revealed using chickens with expired use by date for grilling.

Since serious deficiencies were also identified at the department of meat processing, the CAFIA transmitted the inspection results to the State Veterinary Administration to be solved.
