CAFIA have identified a chocolate product in the market that may be contaminated with salmonella

01/10/2002

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority have a reason to believe that the chocolate product, known in the Czech market under a trademark "Merci", may be contaminated with salmonella.

The above suspicion concerns filled chocolate sticks "Merci Finest Selection" of the German producer Storck Group, with a date of minimum durability 1.4. and 1.5. 2002.

This company has informed earlier on its web site about the products in question, claiming that they had not been distributed in the Czech Republic. The producer confirmed this information to the CAFIA inspectors over the phone.

Nevertheless, CAFIA performed an inspection in the warehouses of distribution companies - VDG, spol. s r.o., and Storck Czech Republic, s.r.o. - finding out that the product "Merci Finest Selection" with the specified dates of minimum durability had been distributed in the Czech market. This concerns some 46 thousand pieces of different packages of the mentioned product. Upon discussion held with CAFIA, both distribution companies started to withdraw the chocolate sticks from the retail trade network. CAFIA continuously checks on he whole situation.

At the same time, samples of the "Merci" chocolate sticks were taken for laboratory analyses. Their results will be known in the next few days.

Although the contamination with salmonella has not been confirmed yet, we do not recommend consuming the product.
