The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) has discovered another product on the market containing muscimol - a neurotoxin (a potent central nervous system depressant) and hallucinogen found in the Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) mushroom.
The product in question is Space Mushies, a package containing 10 gelatine candies, with no batch number, use-by date (UBD), or minimum durability date (MDD). The sample was taken through a test purchase from the website https://www.nejlepsikratom.cz, operated by JITKA ZÁVODNÁ, 273 63 Bratonice 234. Laboratory analysis confirmed that the product contained muscimol in the amount of 757 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg).
Due to the detected muscimol content, the product was classified as harmful to human health under Article 14(2)(a) of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002.
The Food Inspection Authority will initiate administrative proceedings against the inspected party to impose a fine.
The product was seized by CAFIA inspectors as part of an inspection campaign targeting food products that either explicitly state muscimol content on their labels or are suspected of containing muscimol, even if it is not directly mentioned on the packaging or in product descriptions, such as in online sales. During this inspection campaign, CAFIA had previously identified three non-compliant products containing muscimol.
The reason for launching this campaign is the growing number of entities offering products containing muscimol or extracts from Amanita muscaria.
These products are often marketed as non-food items, such as souvenirs or collectibles. However, based on their nature and presentation, it is evident that they are intended for human consumption, and CAFIA inspectors treat them as such.
