CAFIA found more than 400 kg of sea animals stored in yard of convenience store under inadequate conditions

07/22/2020

Inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected violation of several pieces of legislation when checking retail shop “Večerka” at Hrobčice 26 near Teplice.

The inspectors found more than 400 kg of sea animals both in living and slaughtered state. Various sorts of sea fish, octopuses, cuttlefish, crabs, oysters and further animals were stored under utterly unsatisfactory conditions – they were unpacked and freely stored in the yard of the premises in carriers, plastic bags and polystyrene or wooden boxes. The goods were totally unprotected against surroundings’ effects. Storage conditions thus failed to ensure safety of stored animals and foodstuffs, in particular with regard to the risk of contamination from the surroundings and growth of microorganisms.

Further investigation of the case is carried out in co-operation with the State Veterinary Administration competent to perform inspection of production, transport and storage of foodstuffs of animal origin.

The CAFIA inspectors further found six food categories with expired best before date offered together with other goods without their separation and provision of information that foodstuffs with expired best before date were concerned. Due to ongoing renovation in a part of the premises and insufficient safeguarding, increased amount of dust was present at the selling part of the premises. Further violation of legislation included dirty floor and walls caused by long-term filth, neglected maintenance of freezing equipment, cumulation of old bakery products, etc.

The inspectors ordered operator Xuan Tung Nhu from Bílina to remedy the detected deficiencies and CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine.
