CAFIA found misleading meat content in prosciutto crudo; more than a quarter was missing compared to the information on the labelling

06/14/2022

Inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) are intensively engaged in inspecting not only the safety, but also the quality of foodstuffs in the market network, and they have currently banned a batch of imported dried prosciutto crudo with about a quarter lower meat content than stated on the labelling.

CAFIA ordered company Lidl Česká republika v.o.s. to immediately withdraw the non-compliant food ITALIAMO Prosciutto Crudo with best before date by 27 July 2022, batch number FA2211809, manufacturer Filiera Uno Prosciutti S.r.l., via Jacopo Pirona, 15, IT-33038 San Daniele del Friuli, Italy, country of origin: Italy.

The producer stated on the labelling, inter alia, that “100 g of ham was made from 194 g of pork leg”. However, the laboratory analysis confirmed that 100 g of ham was made from 142.5 g of meat only. The claim on the food labelling is therefore misleading as to the actual proportion of meat.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative proceedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.

In the case of dried meat products, the weight of meat is always stated in raw condition; the meat content of this commodity is therefore always higher than the final dry product.
