CAFIA found meat products from abroad with adulterated meat content running into tens of percents

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) repeatedly detects meat products with misleading information on meat content. Some foreign producers reduce the meat content compared to the information on the labelling or adulterate meat with another ingredient of which amount runs into tens of percents. CAFIA inspectors currently detected following cases:

Coquette Hovězí guláš (Beef goulash) packaged à 500 g, best before date by 9th July 2018, lot Nr. L 517090, producer: Dreistern-Konserven GmbH & Co, KG, Philipp-Oehmigke-Straße 4, D- 16816 Neuruppin, Germany, country of origin: Germany. The producer indicated, inter alia, on the labelling: Composition: 80% beef,…”. However, the laboratory analysis proved by means of a so-called nitrate method that the product contained 52.3% of beef only. Indicating untrue information on the labelling, consumers were misled and CAFIA ordered to immediately withdraw the product from the retail network. The non-compliant sample was taken at the premises of Lidl Česká republika v. o. s..

MINIPÁREČKY CLASSIC (mini sausages, Henryk Kania – MISTRZ MASARSKI Z PSZCZYNY packaged à 170 g, use by date by: 23rd  April 2016, lot Nr. 104132071, produced for: Masné výrobky KANIA CZ s.r.o., country of origin: Poland. The producer indicated, inter alia, on the labelling: Composition: Pork leg 93%, …“. However, the laboratory analysis proved by means of a so-called nitrate method that the product contained 78.2% of pork meat only. Indicating untrue information on the labelling, consumers were misled and CAFIA ordered to immediately withdraw the product from the retail network. The non-compliant sample was taken at the premises of Tesco  Stores ČR a.s.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected persons. With regard to repeated detections of adulteration of meat products, CAFIA will continue with inspections of this assortment. CAFIA informed of similar case in its press release of 13th May 2016.
