CAFIA found “grinded vanilla” with synthetic ethylvanillin

01/08/2020

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected following non-compliant foodstuff: Bourbon vanilla grinded, best before date by: 14th May 2021, bio nebio s.r.o., Průmyslová zóna 103, 26751, CR, country of origin: Indonesia. The foodstuff was found in retail network.

Mass spectral analysis proved presence of ethylvanillin in the lot in question amounting to 144 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). Information on the labelling was misleading as it referred to natural vanilla from Indonesia only and the presence of synthetic substance was not indicated on the labelling. Regulation of the European Parliament and the Council (EU) No. 1169/2011 on the provision of information to consumers was thus violated.

CAFIA inspectors sampled the foodstuff during a control purchase carried out at e-shop www.kitchenette.cz run by company KITCHENETTE s.r.o. Further examination of purchasing documents revealed that company bio nebio s.r.o. was the producer of the foodstuff and company Božské príchute s.r.o was then the supplier.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.

Vanilla is expensive commodity and detection of its adulteration by various methods is not sporadic; for example by extracting vanillin from the husks first, than putting the husks into a bath with synthetic vanillin aroma and offering them as purely natural product.
