CAFIA found 26 tons of potatoes with adulterated variety from Germany

05/23/2016

During common inspections focused on the authenticity of potato varieties carried out at sellers, importers and producers, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) currently found and banned placing on the market of a part of 2 lots of potatoes from Germany that had not been sold yet. The total weight of these lots amounted almost to 26 tons. Following cases are concerned:

Late potatoes, variety Belana, size of the lot 24,200 kg, lot: CZ 3940104, country of origin: Germany, supplier: Europlant Pflanzenzenzucht GmbH, 21337 Lunenburg, Germany. Analysis of the sample proved addition of potato tubers differing from the declared variety Belana in the amount exceeding the permitted limit. The inspectors took the non-compliant sample at seller Josef Polák, Lochenice 43, 50302 Předměřice nad Labem.

Late potatoes, variety Jelly, size of the lot 1,700 kg, country of origin: Germany, supplier: Europlant  šlechtitelská spol. s r.o. Lhotská 2221/32, 193 00 Prague 9. The analysis proved that none of the tubers complied with the variety Jelly. The inspectors took the non-compliant sample at seller Jiří Bareš - GIRA, Průmyslová 637, 39101 Sezimovo Ústí.

The variety is the key characteristic of potatoes determinative for so-called boiling type. Incorrect indication of the potato variety is regarded as misleading of consumers.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the operators concerned. During last 3 months, the CAFIA inspectors took a total of 27 samples of potatoes to determine the variety, which are now being analysed. CAFIA has already informed of similar case in it press release of 15th April 2016.
