CAFIA did not release another consignment of peanuts onto the market

06/22/2009

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) carries out controls at foodstuff producers, in the trade network and in cooperation with the Customs Administration of the Czech Republic it also controls import of foodstuffs from the third countries, i. e. from the countries that are not Members of the European Union. Thanks to these controls it is possible to detain consignments of objectionable goods even before their further processing or selling to the final consumer.
Most often the consignments of dry shelled fruits with excessive limit of aflatoxins are concerned. This year CAFIA succeeded in detaining 20 tonnes of peanuts from China, nine tonnes of almonds from the U.S. and lately also 2146 half-kilogram consumer packages of fresh unshelled peanuts of Vietnamese origin. This amount of more than one tonne of peanuts originated from the same container consignment as the dangerous jelly about whose detention had CAFIA already informed (see the press release Dangerous jelly did not get onto the Czech market). This time laboratory results confirmed up to eightfold exceeding of the limit for aflatoxins. Therefore CAFIA sent a binding position to the competent customs office not to release the peanuts into free circulation.
Now the importer has to return the peanuts to his supplier or to destroy them.  With regard to the fact that the peanuts have not got onto the market, consumers are not endangered. CAFIA informed about the case also other EU Member States by means of the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
