CAFIA did not release almost one ton of Neem leaves for praying

04/18/2016

Co-operating with the Customs Authorities, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) did not release onto the internal market a total of 954 kg of leaves of Neem plant also known as Azadirachta indica or Indian Zederah. The attention of inspectors was brought to the information given in the customs declaration indicating “fresh leaves of trees/plants used for human consumption, neem leave while the information for the Customs Authorities declared “Leaves – allegedly used for praying”.

Neem is on the list of plants banned for production of foodstuffs by Decree No. 225/2008 Coll. That is why this plant could not be released onto the market as a foodstuff. Because of the unclear way of use of the leaves and precautionary principle, CAFIA made a Binding Statement that the leaves could not be released on the market. Company Kugapiragash Sivasubramaniam, Oberadener Str. 14, DE 44339, Dortmund, Germany was the supplier of the goods.
