The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) banned releasing of a consignment of blue poppy seeds in the amount of 24 tons onto the European market. CAFIA laboratory analysis proved presence of morphine amounting to 137mg/kg in the lot concerned. Morphine is naturally present in poppy seeds, however, its safe concentration for food poppy seeds is set as 43 mg/kg. Higher concentration cannot be regarded as safe. Sample of the foodstuff originating in Australia was taken at the storage of company FRUMENTA, s.r.o. in Slatiňany. With regard to timely intervention of CAFIA, the non-compliant lot did not get to consumers at all.
The inspection was based on the notification of import of selected commodities according to Decree No. 320/2014 Coll. which is applicable since 1
st January 2015 and orders the importers to notify CAFIA of import of selected sorts of foodstuffs before their arrival into the place of destination in the CR. The obligation concerns selected sorts of fresh fruit and vegetables and further commodities. Importers may notify the foodstuffs by means of the online form on the
CAFIA website, where further information related to the Decree in question is available as well.
