CAFIA did not release 16 tons of unwholesome Brazil nuts from Bolivia on the market

06/17/2014

Laboratory testing carried out the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected that a limit for presence of aflatoxins laid down by legislation was exceeded more than seven times in a consignment of Brazil nuts originating in Bolivia. The maximum permissible concentration of aflatoxins in foodstuffs is 10 micrograms in one kilogram (μg/kg), however, the laboratory analysis confirmed concentration in the amount of 79.18 μg/kg.
Due to the violation of the European Regulation No. 1881/2006 setting maximum levels for certain contaminants in foodstuffs, CAFIA did not release the whole consignment on the internal EU market and consumers were thus not threated. Co-operating with the Customs Office of the Capital City of Prague, CAFIA took the food sample within the strengthened inspection of foodstuffs imported from third countries in the customs territory.
Follow-up investigation showed that it was Prague establishment Diana company s.r.o. that took the goods from Bolivian exporter Sociedad Agricola Industrial BlaBlacutt S.R.L.
