During inspections at public catering operators, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) focuses not only on hygiene and further areas, but also on adulteration of meals offered to consumers. This is enabled by extension of CAFIA competencies since 2015. Relevant legislation provides visitors of public catering premises with the same level of protection against the use of misleading names of meals as during the sale of foodstuffs in retails.
The CAFIA inspectors found a non-compliant meal under name “fried cheese” offered by company Maroko – butcher’s, buffet based on Kněžská 370/16, České Budějovice. The laboratory analysis carried out by CAFIA confirmed that the sample failed to contain milk fat thus that the majority of the milk fat was replaced by plant fats. Legislation provides for that milk products, such as cheese must not contain plant fats or that foodstuffs containing plant fats must not be labelled as “cheese”. The operator offered the product as “fried cheese” on information boards inside and outside the premises and he thus misled consumers. CAFIA ordered the operator the re-label the meal. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the operator.
CAFIA will intensively continue to check the observation of legislation as regards meals and will provide consumers with information on detected deficiencies.
