CAFIA detected misleading information on meat content in canned goulash

01/20/2023

The inspectors of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) have been performing quality checks of foodstuffs available on the market on regular basis, and they currently banned one lot of Hungarian goulash in a can with meat content by 12.2% lower than stated on the labelling.

CAFIA has ordered company Lidl Česká republika v.o.s. to immediately withdraw the non-compliant food product Hungarian Goulash (Sterilised meat product - canned) with best before date by 29.08.2025, producer: Whalley s.r.o., Mikulášovická 552, 407 78 Velký Šenov, Czech Republic. Country of origin: Czech Republic.

The producer stated on the labelling, inter alia, that the product contained 31.25 % of beef and 31.25 % pork, i.e. 62.5 % of meat in total. However, the laboratory analysis confirmed that the total meat content in the product in question amounted to 50.3 % only, i.e. the meat content was by 12.2 % lower than provided on the labelling.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure with the inspected person to impose a fine.
