CAFIA detected adulteration of potato varieties

04/15/2016

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) banned placing on the market of 26 tons of potatoes from Germany at which laboratory analysis confirmed adulteration of the declared variety.

CAFIA inspectors took a sample of potatoes at the premises of company Penny Market s.r.o. which were labelled as “Potatoes consume late, variety Gala”. However, the results of the analysis showed that all the sampled potatoes failed to comply with the given variety, and CAFIA therefore banned placing of the whole lot on the market. The lot was supplied by the central storage of the seller.

During the import inspection the inspectors also took a sample of potatoes at the packaging plant of company AGRICO Bohemia. s.r.o. The analyses of these samples showed that only two thirds of the samples of the declared variety “Potatoes consume late, variety Jelly” complied, and CAFIA therefore imposed ban on placing of the given lot of potatoes on the market. Company KCB Kartoffel-Centrum-Bayern GmBH, Am Oberfeld 3, BRD-94333 Geiselhoring was the supplier of the goods.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the suppliers.

Within the inspection activity focused on the presence of pesticide residues, CAFIA further assessed 20 samples originating in the Czech Republic, Germany, the Netherlands and France. All sample complied with the limits laid down by legislation. The samples from the CR showed lower concentrations compared to the imported ones on average. Pesticide residues were not found in the majority of Czech samples at all.
