CAFIA detained a consignment of contaminated nutmegs
02/14/2008On Wednesday, late afternoon, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority received a notification from the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) informing about a consignment of nutmegs that contain a high level of aflatoxins, which was imported to the Czech Republic. There are approved levels for aflatoxins, however, levels in these imported nutmegs were much higher.
Nutmegs originating in Indonesia were imported to the Czech Republic through Germany. Inspectors from the Plzeň Inspectorate set out early in the morning to check importer’s premises where they found that the whole consignment which the company imported in September had already been sold to another company that should repack it. Further investigation revealed that the whole consignment was still in company’s warehouse and was not unpacked. The whole consignment was placed under a ban and cannot be placed on the market.
Thanks to timely action by the CAFIA and exemplary collaboration of both companies which approached the problem very responsibly, the contaminated consignment did not reach stores. Therefore, consumers are not in danger.
