CAFIA detained 3.6 tonnes of foodstuffs from Vietnam

02/03/2015

During the inspection of a food consignment originating in Vietnam, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA), together with the Customs Authority for the Central Bohemian Region, banned entry of 3.6 tonnes of non-compliant goods into the EU internal market. Pursuant to the accompanying documentation, the consignment should have contained 900 kg of pickled onions, however, the inspection showed that it contained 3,600 kg of pickled onions in plastic cans à 20 l as well as other foodstuffs that failed to undergo the customs declaration. The inspection was carried out in the customs area in Rudná near Prague.
Stacked cans with onions were deformed in the container by their own weight and the leaked content was affected by insects in various evolution stages – larvae, pupas, and partly with mould. With regard to the damage of the packaging, contamination of the cans could be possible and CAFIA therefore did not release the consignment for free circulation. The unsafe foodstuffs which might be intended for example for premises of public catering thus did get to consumers at all.
