CAFIA controlled packed baguettes

11/24/2009

One of the controls of Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority was especially aimed at packed filled baguettes, sandwiches and rolls which are offered to consumers at petrol stations, stands at stations, in small delicatessens or even in shops with different range than foodstuffs where baguettes are sold only as complementary goods. The aim was to find out if sanitary conditions are respected, namely storage temperatures, and if labels of these packed foodstuffs include all obligatory items including information on allergen incidence. Inspectors took foodstuff samples for laboratories where microbiological analyses were carried out. Subsequently, selected samples underwent sensorial evaluation to verify if they do not contain rotten ingredients.
In total 26 inspections were carried out in the whole region of the Czech Republic and 40 samples of packed baguettes, sandwiches and rolls were checked. Not a single sample was found to be unsatisfying, whether regarding quality, safety or labelling. At all points of sale the storage temperatures were respected at the time of control.
When evaluating microbiological analyses CAFIA has to follow binding legal enactments. As far as packed filled baguettes are concerned, provisions set limits for only for bacterium Listeria monocytogenes and in case eggs are contained in the product, also for Salmonella bacterium. The limit for bacteria incidence was not exceeded in any sample.
Although the inspection has not revealed any defects, CAFIA will keep controlling packed filled baguettes in the future.
