CAFIA checks stallholders at bus and railway stations

09/19/2005

sendvice.jpg The Prague Inspectorate of the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) checks snack stalls at bus stations in Prague and in some places of the Central Bohemia region. The inspectors in particular check whether sellers keep prescribed temperature for food storage, determined by the producer of sold food at 5 °C.

Out of 8 stalls that have been checked so far, and where baguettes, sandwiches, chilled fried schnitzels, and potato pancakes are sold, only two stalls were in order. In the other 6 stalls (75%) the inspectors recorded temperatures from 10 up to 23 °C. Food was mostly stored on counters, if there were cooling boxes in the stall, their temperature was inappropriate.

The temperature at which food is stored is very important to maintain food safety, in particular the safety of risk food such as delicatessen products. Pathogenic micro-organisms that can cause serious alimentary diseases (i.e. food borne illnesses) multiply more quickly in higher temperatures.

The inspectors prohibited to further sell all food that was stored in unsuitable temperature conditions and ordered sellers to remedy the deficiencies. In all cases an administrative proceeding will be initiated with stallholders and a fine will be imposed.

The inspection of stalls at bus and railway stations will continue.
