The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) warns consumers against unsafe foodstuff on the market: Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, producer: EQUUS a.s., premises in Vinica, Cesta Slobody 771, 991 28 Vinica, produced for: EQUUS a.s., Hviezdna 38, 821 06, Slovakia.

Based on a notification received by the National Contact Point CAFIA within the European Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed RASFF from Slovakia, the suspicion of presence of tropane alkaloids concerns following food lots:

Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, BBD: 9.5.2023, L3857,

Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, BBD: 9.5.2023, L1257,

Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, BBD: 10.5.2023, L2457,

Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, BBD: 10.5.2023, L2957,

Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, BBD: 10.5.2023, L3857,

Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, BBD: 11.5.2023, L1457,

Deeply frozen spinach puree 450 g, BBD: 12.5.2023, L3457.

Laboratory analysis of the food in question confirmed presence of tropane alkaloids in amount severalfold exceeding the safe level for consumption by an adult person. The consumption thus presents significant risk of pharmacological effect on human organism. Foodstuff was assessed as very unsafe pursuant to Article 14 Para 2 Letter a) of Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002. CAFIA ordered its immediate withdrawal from the market.

Company EISBERG, a.s., who is the distributor to the CR, initiated withdrawal of the product taking its own measures. According to the present detection, foodstuffs were placed on the market by COOP and Billa retail chains.

CAFIA strongly warns all consumers against consumption of the food lots in question, which they could still have at home due to its long shelf life.

Tropane alkaloids rank among potent poisons present in plants of solanaceous order, which include for example thorn apple (Datura stramonium) or nightshade (Atropa belladonna).
