CAFIA banned “tea” yerb maté with pesticides

08/09/2022

Within regular checks performed at wholesellers and importers, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) found following non-compliant foodstuff: YERBA MATE KHARTA KHADRA (dried foodstuff for preparation of “tea” maté), lot: MAF:09-2021/EXP:08-2024, best before date by: 08-2024, country of origin: Syria. CAFIA immediately banned placing of this foodstuff on the market.

Broad spectrum analysis performed in an accredited laboratory confirmed the presence of the pesticide anthraquinone in the food sample amounting to 0.081 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) while relevant legislation sets the maximum admissible amount for that pesticide no more than 0.02 mg/kg.

Company ORIENTA FOODS GmbH - Am Treff 1 - 06124 Halle/Saale, Germany is the supplier of the foodstuff in question. The non-compliant sample was taken at the premises of company Z & S Care Belina s.r.o., Turgeněvova 985/7, Brno.

Anthraquinone is a pesticide used for protection against pests. The European Commission classifies it as a carcigoneous substance.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine. CAFIA recommends all consumers who have the lot in question at home that they do not eat it.
