CAFIA banned Polish ice cream

07/15/2010

Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority banned sale of ice cream with coconut in cocoa icing Imperium kokos (packaging 125 ml, best before date 08. 06. 2011) because laboratories confirmed presence of peanuts in it, however, their content was not declared in food ingredients. Both peanuts and all dry shell fruits (almonds, cashew, walnuts, hazelnuts, cashew nuts, brazil nuts and pistachios etc.) belong to allergen ingredients and as such have to be declared in food composition. The data about composition are vitally important to people suffering from allergies to some ingredients because only from composition they are able to judge whether they can consume certain foodstuff without having to worry. Foodstuffs in which an allergen is found, which is not declared in composition, are clasified as dangerous with regard to potential impact on health of allergic people.

Ice cream Imperium kokos was produced in Poland. Distributor in the territory of the Czech Republic was entreprenerur Jaromír Macháček – J. A. D. from Litovel. The product was available solely in business premises of the retail chain Ahold. CAFIA banned the ice cream and ordered to withdraw it from circulation. The inspectors succeeded in detaining more than ten thousand packagings of this foodstuff still in stores of Jaromír Macháček – J. A. D., however, the bigger part already reached the shops, hence the end consumers. With regard to a long minimum durability date consumers can still store the product at home. Thus, the Inspection Authority does not recommend consumption of this foodstuff to people suffering from allergy to peanuts.
