CAFIA banned food supplement for children

09/08/2020

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered to immediately withdraw a food supplement from retail network. Following product is concerned: Infants Dophilus Plus (Probiotic complex for children, recommended from 4th month; 7 probiotic cultures, 6 billions of viable bacteria in 1 g), 20 g à packaging, use by date by: 15. 4. 2021, lot: 50TC045, producer was not stated, country of origin: Canada.

Analysis carried out in the CAFIA laboratory confirmed presence of milk protein amounting to 5,412 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg). With regard to the fact that the labelling failed to provide information on the presence of milk protein, the foodstuff is unsafe for persons suffering from allergy or intolerance to the allergen in question.

The analysis proved also presence of lactose amounting to 2,500 mg/kg. With regard to the fact that the labelling contained, inter alia, following information: “without milk sugar (lactose),” presence of this substance is not admissible in this foodstuff, and the foodstuff is thus misleadingly labelled.

Due to the presence of the allergen which was not stated on the labelling, the foodstuff cannot be regarded as safe. CAFIA inspectors therefore ordered the seller – company TAINEX, s.r.o., to immediately withdraw the non-compliant lot in question from retail network. The inspectors sampled the product within inspection of Internet sale on www.tainex.cz. According to the information on the labelling, company Pharma Agency, s.r.o. from Prague is the importer of the foodstuff into the CR.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine.
