CAFIA banned Central American honey labelled as originating in the EU, Czech Republic and Spain

11/15/2018

The Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) ordered inspected person NATU s.r.o. to immediately withdraw from the market non-compliant honey “Orange blossom honey” packaged à 250 g with best before date by 12/2019, producer: Včelařství Thomayer, Josef Thomayer, Chodov 24, Trhanov.

The producer indicated on the labelling of the foodstuff in question: “Country of origin: EU.” However, laboratory analysis proved that the foodstuff was of different geographical origin, namely pollen analyses proved its origin in “Central America.”

The producer further violated legislation offering the foodstuff in his e-shop together with information “…single-component blossom honey made from nectar of orange tree blossoms from Spain and with content of vitamins…” The producer further indicated another piece of information regarding the origin: “Country of origin: Czech Republic.”

Indication of misleading information on the country of origin is violation of applicable legislation. CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person. CAFIA inspectors further ordered the seller to immediately withdraw the deficient lot from network and to correct the information in the e-shop.

CAFIA entered the information into the European anti Food Fraud System (AACS).
