CAFIA banned 300 kg of green tea with insecticide permethrin content five times higher than the limit

11/24/2020

Within ongoing precautionary inspections focused on the presence of pesticides in foodstuffs, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (CAFIA) detected a non-compliant lot of pure green tea THA'I NGUYEN TEA SPECIAL (no. 340) with best before date by 06-2022, produced by HANG - KHANG TEA COMPANY, THAI NGUYEN, Vietnam, originating in Vietnam.

Large-scale laboratory analysis confirmed presence of insecticide permethrin amounting to 0.58 milligrams per one kilogram of the foodstuff (mg/kg), however, legislation lays down the maximum permissible limit amounting to 0.1 mg/kg only. The operator thus violated requirements of the Regulation (EC) No. 396/2005 on maximum residue levels of pesticides in or on foodstuffs.

CAFIA inspectors took the sample of the foodstuff in question at the storage of company AMANA s.r.o. in Prague. The inspectors ordered the inspected person to immediately withdraw the non-compliant lot of the tea from retail network and inform his clients. According to the provided documents and information of the inspected person, the size of the non-compliant lot amounted to 300 kg.

CAFIA will initiate an administrative procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected person.
