During inspections carried out after 27^th December 2013, the Czech Agriculture and Food Inspection Authority (hereinafter „CAFIA“ only) revealed significant amount of unsafe and poor-quality foodstuffs offered for sale despite obvious presence of both live and dead pests or bad smell caused by deterioration. In the pre-Christmas time, five lots of dried dates with presence of dead pests larvae have already been withdrawn by CAFIA from three retail chains (see Press Releases of 18^th and 20^th December 2013). Comparable deficiencies of this assortment typical for Christmas were found this year as well. Since the end of Christmas holidays, CAFIA has banned 11 lots of dried fruits and nuts yet.

It is the case of four lots of dried dates where presence of dead larvae and beetles in fruit and traces of their activity, particularly excrements and gnawing, were revealed by CAFIA after opening the package. Unsatisfactory foodstuffs were found at the premises of Tesco Stores ČR, a. s. on Nádražní Street in Kdyně and on Domažlická Street in Klatovy and also at the premises of company ČEROZFRUCHT s.r.o., Na Jíkalce in Pilsen. Foodstuffs affected by pests are considered to be unsafe. Therefore CAFIA in accordance with Regulation (EC) No. 178/2002 ordered operators to withdraw immediately lots in question from retail network. Furthermore, the Inspection Authority banned releasing seven lots of dried nuts into circulation. It is a case of two lots of walnuts in shell offered by Globus ČR, k.s. in Chotíkov. CAFIA revealed traces of pests´ activity in the kernels, particularly gnawing and cobwebs. Kernels were also affected by mould and they were unnaturally shrivelled and dark. Similar deficiencies had one lot of walnuts offered by Kaufland Česká republika v.o.s. on Pivovarská Street in Domažlice. CAFIA found mouldy edible chestnuts in Ahold Czech Republic, a.s. on Gerská Street in Pilsen and also in the above mentioned establishment of Globus in Chotíkov. CAFIA will initiate an administration procedure on imposition of a fine with the inspected persons.
